ACROSS Scheme
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given its approval for the continuation of the “Atmosphere & Climate Research-Modelling Observing Systems & Services (ACROSS)” scheme. The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) oversees this umbrella scheme, which focuses on advancing weather and climate research and services for the next five years (2021-2026).
Objectives and Sub-Schemes
The ACROSS scheme encompasses a range of atmospheric science programs, primarily driven by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), and Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS). It consists of eight sub-schemes, each with specific objectives, to enhance weather monitoring, forecasting systems, climate research, and numerical modeling.
ACROSS Sub-Schemes
- Commissioning of Polarimetric Doppler Weather Radars (DWRs) – IMD: Implementing advanced weather radars for improved monitoring.
- Upgradation of Forecast System – IMD: Enhancing weather prediction systems for better accuracy and timeliness.
- Weather & Climate Services – IMD: Providing enhanced weather and climate services to end-users.
- Atmospheric Observations Network – IMD: Establishing an extensive atmospheric observation network for comprehensive data collection.
- Numerical Modelling of Weather and Climate – NCMRWF: Developing advanced numerical models for improved weather and climate predictions.
- Monsoon Mission III – IITM/NCMRWF/INCOIS/IMD: Studying and understanding monsoon patterns to enhance forecasts.
- Monsoon Convection, Clouds, and Climate Change (MC4) – IITM/NCMRWF/IMD: Researching monsoon-related phenomena and climate change impacts.
- High-Performance Computing System (HPCS) – IITM/NCMRWF: Establishing high-performance computing systems for efficient data processing.
Impact and Employment Generation
The ACROSS scheme is set to significantly improve weather, climate, and ocean forecasts, benefiting various sectors such as agriculture, aviation, environment, water management, and tourism. Furthermore, the successful implementation of these services is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities.
