The AI supercomputer, AIRAWAT, installed at C-DAC in Pune, Maharashtra, has achieved a global ranking of 75th in the 61st edition of the ‘Top 500 Global Supercomputing List’. This milestone was announced at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC 2023) in Germany, highlighting India’s position as a leading nation in AI supercomputing. The system is a part of the National Program on AI initiated by the Government of India.

Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary, Shri Alkesh Sharma, expressed his satisfaction with this achievement, emphasizing India’s strong ecosystem and competitive advantage in AI. He mentioned that India has been actively working on applied AI in various sectors such as natural language processing, image processing, agriculture, healthcare, education, and robotics. The goal is to develop solutions for strategic sectors and empower citizens and organizations to address society’s pressing challenges.

Abhishek Singh, President & CEO of NeGD and MeitY, stated that the Proof of Concept (PoC) AI Research Analytics and Knowledge Dissemination Platform (AIRAWAT) currently has a computing capacity of 200 AI Petaflops, supported by MeitY and implemented by C-DAC, Pune. When combined with PARAM Siddhi – AI, it reaches a total peak compute capacity of 410 AI Petaflops Mixed Precision and sustained compute capacity of 8.5 Petaflops (Rmax) Double Precision.

The government’s vision is to leverage technology and artificial intelligence for the welfare of the common people, contributing to the socioeconomic growth of the nation. MeitY has already planned to scale AIRAWAT to a computing capacity of 1,000 AI Petaflops Mixed Precision to meet the current computational needs in AI.
