In 1995, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) opened up the Internet to the public. The first commercial Internet service provider (ISP) in India was Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), which was later renamed Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).
