Dr. Mangala Narlikar, a renowned mathematician and the wife of Dr. Jayant Narlikar, the founder and director of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) based in Pune, has sadly passed away at the age of 80.
Dr. Mangala Narlikar dedicated her career to research in pure mathematics. About Dr. Mangala Narlikar
Dr. Mangala Narlikar was an Indian mathematician who did research in pure mathematics as well as written for a lay audience. After her degree in mathematics, she initially worked at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai and later worked as a lecturer at the University of Bombay and Pune.
She was born on May 17, 1943, in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She received degrees of B. A. (Maths) in 1962 and M.A. (Maths) in 1964 with first rank and also won the Chancellor’s gold medal. She married Jayant Narlikar, a well-known cosmologist and physicist, in 1966. They have three daughters, Geeta, Girija, and Leelavati, all of whom have pursued careers in science; one (Geeta) is a Professor of Biochemistry at the University of California, San Francisco, and the other two are in computer science.
Dr. Narlikar’s research interests included differential geometry, topology, and general relativity. She published several papers in these areas, and she also wrote a number of popular books on mathematics, including “Fun and Fundamentals of Mathematics” and “Glimpses of Mathematics.”
Dr. Narlikar was a gifted mathematician and a talented writer. She was also a dedicated teacher and a role model for women in science. She died on July 17, 2023, at the age of 80.
