Foreign Ministers of SCO member countries meet in Goa

Foreign ministers from eight member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) have reached Goa to attend its Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) meeting on 5 May. India, the host country, gives immense significance to SCO for promoting various interactions in the region such as multilateral, political, security, economic, and people-to-people. This meeting will set the platform for the SCO Leaders’ Summit that will take place in July in New Delhi.

How many countries are in SCO?

There are currently eight member countries in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), namely China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. In 2023, Iran will become the latest addition to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the largest regional organization, joining the forum under India’s chairmanship.

When did India join SCO?

At the SCO summit in Astana, Kazakhstan on July 5, 2005, Pakistan, India, and Iran were granted observer status. Later in 2017, India and Pakistan became full members of the organization.

What is the old name of SCO?

The old name of SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) is Shanghai Five. It was created in 1996 by China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan with the primary objective of demilitarizing the China- Russia border and maintaining regional stability. In 2001, Uzbekistan joined the organization, and the group was renamed the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
