Praveen Sood, the Director General of Police of Karnataka, has been appointed as the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by a high-powered selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He will hold the position for two years, succeeding Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, whose tenure will end on May 25. - Sood was appointed as Karnataka DGP in January 2020, superseding Ashit Mohan Prasad, who was from the previous batch.

- Sood was posted as Commissioner of Police in Bengaluru in 2017, where he launched ‘Namma 100’ – an emergency response system for citizens in distress – and was instrumental in launching the ‘Suraksha’ App and ‘Pink Hoyasala’ managed by women cops, especially for women and children in distress.
- Although his term as Bengaluru Commissioner was for one year, he was transferred in seven months by the government led by the then chief minister Siddaramaiah.
- Sood has been decorated with the Chief Minister’s Gold Medal for Excellence in Service in 1996, the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2002, and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2011.
