Early Life and Family
Karumuttu T Kannan, a prominent industrialist and philanthropist, breathed his last on Tuesday morning in Madurai, following a brief illness. At the age of 70, he was the Chairman and Managing Director of Thiagarajar Mills Ltd, a well-established company based in Madurai. Kannan is survived by his wife Uma Kannan, along with his daughters Visalakshi and Radha, and his son Hari Thiagarajan, who currently serves as the executive director of Thiagarajar Mills.
A Legacy of Philanthropy and Entrepreneurship
Kannan hailed from a notable lineage of industrialists and philanthropists. He was the son of the late Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar, the founder of Thiagarajar Mills in 1936. Born on May 9, 1953, in Madurai, Kannan obtained his business administration degree from Madurai University. Throughout his life, he actively engaged with various organizations associated with industry, education, and charitable causes.
Extensive Experience in the Textile Industry
With a wealth of experience in the textile industry, Kannan held distinguished positions in several renowned institutions. He served as the Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Southern Region, as well as the Textiles Committee and The Cotton Textile Export Promotion Council, both located in Mumbai. Furthermore, he held the esteemed position of Chairman in The South India Mills’ Association.
Contributions to Education and Governance
Apart from his accomplishments in the industrial sector, Kannan was also deeply involved in the field of education. Currently, he held the role of President at Thiagarajar College in Madurai, and he served as the Chairman and Correspondent of Thiagarajar College of Engineering, also based in Madurai. In addition, he made significant contributions as a member of the Syndicate Anna University in Chennai, the Board of Governors of IIM Indore, and the Board of Governors of the National Institute of Technology in Trichy.
Remembering a Visionary Leader
Following Kannan’s passing, Venu Srinivasan, Chairman Emeritus of TVS Motor Company, expressed profound grief over the loss. Srinivasan regarded Kannan not only as a trusted colleague but also as a dear and loyal friend, emphasizing his wisdom and insightful guidance during challenging times.
Srinivasan praised Kannan’s exceptional foresight, business acumen, and his unwavering commitment to society, evident in his instrumental role in the success of Thiagarajar College and his invaluable contributions to the Meenakshi Temple. Srinivasan concluded by highlighting Kannan’s graceful, dignified, and purpose-driven approach to fulfilling his responsibilities.
