More About the News
The government has placed significant emphasis on enhancing connectivity infrastructure, and the inauguration of the New Integrated Terminal Building at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair is a testament to this focus. Built at a cost of approximately ₹710 crore, the new terminal building is expected to play a crucial role in improving connectivity to the island of Union Territory. With a total built-up area of around 40,800 sqm, the terminal building has the capacity to handle about 50 lakh passengers annually. Additionally, an Apron has been constructed at a cost of ₹80 Crore, enabling the parking of up to ten aircraft at a time, including two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321 aircraft.
The architectural design of the new terminal building is inspired by nature and features a shell-shaped structure that symbolizes the sea and islands. The design incorporates several sustainability features, such as a double insulated roofing system to reduce heat gain, skylights for ample natural sunlight during the day, LED lighting, and low heat gain glazing. The building also includes rainwater harvesting, an on-site sewage treatment plant that reuses 100% of treated wastewater for landscaping, and a 500 KW capacity solar power plant. These features aim to minimize the negative impact on the islands’ environment.
As the gateway to the pristine islands of Andaman and Nicobar, Port Blair is a popular tourist destination. The spacious and modern New Integrated Terminal Building will not only facilitate increased air traffic but also boost tourism in the region. Moreover, it will create employment opportunities for the local community and contribute to the economic growth of the region.
