The National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways & Coasts (NTCPWC) was officially opened by Union Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at the IIT-Madras Discovery Campus.
As part of the Make in India strategy, this hub will support the creation of technological solutions for the industry, resulting in growth overall. The Discovery Campus of IIT Madras was founded in February 2018 and is situated on a 163-acre location in Thaiyur, some 36 kilometres from the main campus in Guindy.
Modern multifunctional maritime laboratories with a focus on climate change, marine robotics, marine informatics and analytics, smart modelling, and simulation will be added to the NTCPWC, the Union Shipping Ministry’s technology arm. The NTCPWC will also develop a marine innovation hub, which will act as the focal point for encouraging businesses and innovation in the country.
What Does NTCPWC Do?
The National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways & Coasts (NTCPWC) was founded under the ambitious Sagarmala programme at a cost of Rs 77 crore with a mandate to introduce cutting-edge technology to the port and waterways sectors.
The NTCPWC will make it possible to create Make in India technological solutions for this vital industry, spurring the development of ports, waterways, and coastal villages. Through scientific support, instruction applied research, and technology transfer at the local, regional, national, and worldwide levels, this centre will act as a “role model,” offering solutions to problems facing the maritime sector.
The centre, which occupies a four-acre plot of land on the NTCPWC-IIT Madras Discovery Campus, houses five cutting-edge labs, including the “Sedimentation Management and Test Basin,” a sizable shallow water port and waterway facility, and a marine information and communication laboratory that creates iVTMS and e-navigation products.
