FIBA Asia President
Dr. K. Govindaraj, a Congress MLC, has been elected as the President of FIBA Asia, the International Basketball Federation in Asia. He is also the President of the Basketball Federation of India and the Karnataka Olympic Association. This historic nomination marks the first time an Indian has been chosen to lead FIBA Asia, which represents 44 countries. Dr. Govindaraj’s appointment was unanimously ratified at the FIBA Asia Congress, solidifying his position as the first Indian to hold this prestigious role in the international basketball community in Asia.
Dr. K. Govindaraj has assumed the role of President of FIBA Asia, succeeding Qatar’s Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani, who served as the head of FIBA Asia for four consecutive five-year terms since 2002. Following his confirmation, Dr. Govindaraj expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and responsibility to lead Asian basketball. He emphasized that it is an honor for the entire Indian sports fraternity and pledged to contribute towards the development of basketball in Asia during his tenure.
Dr. K. Govindaraj emerged as the sole nominee for the position of FIBA Asia President. Additionally, he led a group of 11 other nominees for the FIBA Asia Zone Board. Among the nominees was Yao Ming, a renowned Chinese basketball legend and eight-time NBA All-Star, who was vying for the role of FIBA Asia Zone Chairman. The list of nominees demonstrated a strong and diverse pool of individuals contributing to the governance and development of basketball in the Asian region.
