The Theme of the World Environment Day 2023

The theme for the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day on June 5, 2023, is centered around finding solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution, ‘Ecosystem Restoration‘. Plastic has become a global issue, with over 400 million tonnes of plastic produced annually, half of which is intended for single-use purposes.
Unfortunately, less than 10 percent of this plastic is recycled, resulting in an estimated 19-23 million tonnes ending up in our lakes, rivers, and oceans.
Plastic waste now fills our landfills, pollutes our seas, and when incinerated, releases toxic smoke, posing a severe threat to our planet.
Furthermore, microplastics, tiny particles of plastic, have made their way into our food, water, and even the air we breathe.
Many plastic products also contain harmful additives, which can potentially endanger our health.

The encouraging news is that we have scientific knowledge and solutions to address this problem, and progress is already being made. However, what is crucial at this stage is a strong push of public and political pressure to accelerate and expand actions taken by governments, companies, and other stakeholders. It is essential to recognize the urgency of this crisis and rally global action on this World Environment Day.

Host Country

World Environment Day 2023 will be hosted by Côte d’Ivoire in collaboration with the Netherlands.

Côte d’Ivoire has emerged as a leader in the fight against plastic pollution, having implemented a ban on plastic bags since 2014 and encouraging the use of reusable packaging.
- The country’s largest city, Abidjan, has also become a hub for environmentally conscious start-ups, showcasing their commitment to sustainable practices.

The Government of the Netherlands will support this year’s World Environment Day, as they are actively engaged in addressing plastic pollution throughout its lifecycle.
