The Yoga Mahotsav 2023, a three-day event commemorating the 100-day countdown to the International Day of Yoga 2023, was inaugurated today in New Delhi by Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ayush and Ports, Shipping & Waterways. In his opening speech, the Minister highlighted how the promotion and acceptance of yoga have positioned India as a global leader in the health and wellness industry. As part of the event, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal also launched a one-minute video on “Y” Break Yoga, aimed at encouraging a larger audience, especially workaholics, to incorporate yoga into their lifestyle.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, earlier in the day, urged everyone to mark the hundred-day countdown to Yoga Day with enthusiasm, emphasizing the importance of integrating yoga into their lives.
Dignitaries and Participants
The inauguration ceremony of the Yoga Mahotsav was attended by several dignitaries, including Shri G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of Culture, Tourism, and DoNER; Shri N. Biren Singh, Chief Minister of Manipur; Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi, Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture; and Dr. Munjpara Mahendrabhai, Union Minister of State for Ayush. The event also saw the participation of esteemed individuals such as Dr. H.R. Nagendra, Chancellor of SVYASA University in Bengaluru; Munishree Kamal Kumar from the Terapanth Samaj in Rajasthan; and international athlete Ms. Hima Das.

During the event, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal expressed appreciation for the continued efforts of Prime Minister Modi in establishing India’s leadership in yoga, Ayurveda, and traditional knowledge healthcare systems. He emphasized that the promotion and acceptance of yoga are aligning with the G20’s focus on sustainable and inclusive growth, further solidifying India’s commitment to “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family) as a guiding principle in its global engagement.
Encouraging Corporate Yoga
Shri Sarbananda Sonowal appealed to corporate houses to establish a “Yoga Cell” within their office premises, enabling rejuvenation and enhancing efficiency in the workplace. He highlighted that over 12,000 research papers related to yoga have been published in indexed journals, showcasing the extensive scientific evidence-based research conducted in India and other countries.
Yoga as a Cultural Ambassador and Contributor to Well-being
Shri G. Kishan Reddy emphasized the role of yoga as a cultural ambassador, uniting people worldwide, and mentioned the Prime Minister’s vision of using yoga as a catalyst for tourism. He highlighted the launch of Medical and Health Tourism programs focusing on specialized yoga and wellness programs to enhance visitors’ health and well-being.
Ms. Meenakshi Lekhi stated that yoga has become an integral part of our lifestyle, contributing to stress reduction and overall physical and mental well-being.
Celebration and Promotion of Yoga
Shri N. Biren Singh, Chief Minister of Manipur, highlighted the celebration of Yoga Day across the state, with various organizations, including educational institutions and security forces, participating in large numbers. Dr. Munjpara Mahendrabhai emphasized the popularity, global support, and acceptance garnered by previous editions of the International Day of Yoga. He underlined the importance of Yoga Mahotsav 2023, marking the official beginning of the 100-day countdown to IDY 2023 and encouraging wider participation in yoga-related activities.
