From 20th to 22nd March 2023, the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy held their annual Konkan 2023 maritime exercise off the Konkan coast in the Arabian Sea. The Royal Navy, the United Kingdom’s naval warfare force, participated in the exercise with their Type 23 guided missile frigate HMS Lancaster, while the Indian Navy deployed the guided missile frigate INS Trishul.
The primary objective of the exercise was to enhance cooperation and learn best practices through various maritime drills, including air, surface, and sub-surface operations. These drills included gunnery shoots on an inflatable surface target named ‘Killer Tomato,’ helicopter operations, anti-aircraft and anti-submarine warfare exercises, Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS), ship manoeuvres, and personnel exchange.
Throughout the execution of the exercise, the personnel of both navies displayed a remarkable level of professionalism and enthusiasm, indicating that the exercise proved to be highly beneficial for them. The focus was on operational readiness, improving cooperation, and the ability to conduct joint operations, all of which will significantly contribute to strengthening the IN and RN’s combined efforts to enhance maritime security and maintain a rules-based order in the region.
