IIT Bombay’s SHUNYA Takes 2nd Place in Solar Decathlon Build Challenge – Highlights
SHUNYA, a team of more than 50 students from various departments of IIT Bombay, represented India in the Solar Decathlon Build Challenge, where they competed against 31 other teams from around the world.
Their entry was a zero-energy house designed to address air pollution concerns in Mumbai’s hot and humid climate.
The house was equipped with a 14-kW solar PV Plant and an innovative in-house automation system, which included a dehumidifier system specifically designed for coastal weather patterns.
Additionally, the house featured water-saving fixtures, a recycling system, and rainwater harvesting setup, resulting in an 80% reduction in water consumption compared to a typical home.
What Is Solar Decathlon Build Challenge?
The Solar Decathlon Build Challenge is a two-year competition where teams work to design and operate houses in their respective regions to showcase innovative solutions to real-world problems in the building industry.
The competition concludes in the Solar Decathlon Competition Event at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in April 2023, where industry experts evaluate the teams’ houses’ successful operation and the excellence of their solutions.
In addition, the teams can display their work to the public through local exhibitions, and the winners receive national exposure through media outreach efforts, which benefits both the participants and their academic institutions.
