To commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the Meter Convention in 1875, World Metrology Day is observed annually on 20 May. This international treaty, signed in Paris, laid the foundation for global agreement on units of measurement. The World Metrology Day project is a collaborative effort between the BIPM and the OIML.

History of World Metrology Day 2023
World Metrology Day marks the signing of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875, where representatives from seventeen nations came together. This convention laid the groundwork for international cooperation in the field of measurement and its applications in industry, commerce, and society. The original objective of the Metre Convention, achieving worldwide uniformity in measurement, remains as relevant today as it was in 1875.
World Metrology Day
During the convention, the metric system was established, and the International Prototype of the Kilogramme (IPK) was designated as the standard unit of mass. Additionally, the International Prototype of the Metre (IPM) was selected as the standard unit of length.
