According to the recently published THE Asia Rankings 2023 by Times Higher Education (THE), the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has secured the top position among universities in India. These rankings evaluate the performance and reputation of universities across Asia, providing valuable insights into their academic excellence and research contributions. The recognition of IISc as the leading university in India underscores its commitment to high-quality education, research, and innovation, solidifying its position as a prestigious institution in the region.
About the THE Asia Rankings
The Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2023 is a ranking of universities in Asia, published by Times Higher Education. The ranking is based on 13 performance indicators, which are grouped into five areas:
- Teaching: The learning environment and the quality of teaching.
- Research: The volume, impact and reputation of research.
- Citations: The influence of a university’s research.
- International outlook: The extent to which a university engages with the world.
- Industry income: The links between a university and the business community.
THE Asia Rankings 2023
- The 2023 ranking includes 669 universities from 31 territories.
- Japan takes the lead with 117 universities, followed by China with 95 universities.
- Singapore is the second most represented country, with 38 universities in the ranking.
- India is the third most represented country, with 75 universities in the ranking.
- The top 10 universities in the ranking are all from China or Singapore.
- Peking University and Tsinghua University in China take the first and second positions for the fourth year in a row.
- The University of Hong Kong is third, followed by National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University, both in Singapore.
India in the THE Asia Rankings 2023
- The highest-ranked Indian university, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, fell six places from 42nd in 2022 to 48th in 2023.
- India has made a significant impact in the rankings, with 18 universities being listed among the top 200 in Asia. This highlights the growing recognition of Indian higher education on a global scale.
- Among the top 100 universities in Asia, India is represented by four institutions. In addition to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research holds the 68th position, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences ranks 77th, and Mahatma Gandhi University shares the 95th spot with Xi’an Jiaotong University from China.
- While India has shown improvement in its representation among the top 200 universities, some institutions that were previously included have not made the list this year.
- Jawaharlal Nehru University, ranked 167th in 2022, and IIT Gandhinagar, which held the 120th position last year, are notable exclusions. These changes highlight the dynamic nature of university rankings and the continuous competition among institutions.
India’s universities are still struggling to compete with the top universities in China and Singapore but India is investing heavily in higher education, and its universities are becoming more internationalized.
