However, Elon Musk reacted positively to the failure and stated that it was not the end of this super-powerful rocket’s first test. The SpaceX engineers experienced a significant setback when their colossal “Starship” exploded shortly after takeoff on April 20, 2023. This uncrewed spacecraft, which was the tallest ever built, was scheduled for its first flight test at 9:28 am EDT (1328 GMT) from the SpaceX Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas. Unfortunately, the test ended in what is referred to as a “rapid unscheduled disassembly.”
The creators of this massive spacecraft had high expectations for it to be the initial stride in human exploration towards the planet Mars. Previously, the launch had been postponed due to atmospheric pressure issues.
What Happened During The Rocket Malfunction
On Thursday, the rocket initially lifted off successfully, but it suddenly rotated at an altitude shortly before the explosion, which occurred approximately four minutes after liftoff. Evidently, the booster and cruise vessel of the rocket system fractured and failed to separate adequately after liftoff, which could have caused the explosion in the sky.
SpaceX Starship Explodes – Elon’s Optimistic Response
Elon Musk, the entrepreneur who established SpaceX and presently serves as CEO of Twitter, tweeted that this was merely a trial, and there is no need to panic as another launch will be arranged soon. He also congratulated the entire spacecraft development team and considered this explosion as a learning opportunity. Prior to the launch, the American company SpaceX had cautioned about the low probability of success. The primary goal of this flight test was to gather valuable data, irrespective of whether the mission was successful or not.
Employees Took It As A Lesson
Although the Starship flight was a discouraging event, the company remained optimistic and upbeat. SpaceX declared that the Starship experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly, which occurred just before stage separation. Fortunately, as no one was on board the spacecraft, no one was harmed.
This suborbital test was significant since it was the first comprehensive trial in which the Starship cruise vessel, capable of carrying up to 100 astronauts, was mounted atop the Super Heavy booster rocket. The vehicle had 33 Raptor engines, which supplied the tremendous thrust necessary to propel it forward.
Elon Aims For Mars
NASA has its own risk management protocols and does not undertake experiments in the same manner as SpaceX. As the company is owned by Elon Musk, it has a history of flight mishaps. Several spacecraft are currently being prepared for future tests.
Musk revealed that the Starship was previously known as the BFR, which stands for Big Fucking Rocket. His ultimate goal is to send humans into space and make them an interplanetary species. Therefore, his plan is to establish a colony on Mars as a safeguard against the potential extinction of humanity due to nuclear or asteroid events on Earth.
Additionally, the company claims to have a payload capacity of nearly 150 tons, allowing for groups of people to embark on extended space voyages. This year, Musk has a project scheduled for an 11-person trip orbiting the moon.
