A Book Tittled “Droupadi Murmu: From Tribal Hinterlands to Raisina Hills” by Kasturi Ray
President Droupadi Murmu opened her inaugural speech with the tribal greeting “Johar!”, signalling a watershed moment in the country’s history and a new course in its politics. “Droupadi Murmu: From Tribal Hinterlands to Raisina Hills” follows the extraordinary journey of a tribal girl who overcome adversity to become a symbol of resilience, drive, and grit. Kasturi Ray uses interviews and in-depth analysis to trace Murmu’s journey from a small village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district to her eventual ascension to become India’s First Citizen.
Despite personal tragedy, Murmu remained dedicated to assisting the underprivileged and providing a voice for the oppressed. Her election as the country’s leader in the 75th year of independence gave millions of tribals, women, and other marginalised groups hope. This uplifting story follows her journey as a warrior, believer, and victor, leaving an indelible legacy.
About the Author
Kasturi Ray has over 28 years of journalism experience and has worked extensively in print, broadcast, and internet media. She is currently the Senior News Editor of The New Indian Express in Bhubaneswar, where she previously worked as the Features Editor for 19 years. Ray thereafter moved on to the fast-paced and dynamic world of digital media, where he spent over three years as a Senior Editor for Odisha Television Limited’s English internet platform.
Ray, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, has had his writing published in a variety of publications, including Firstpost, The Quint, Women’s Features Service, and The Asian Age. Her interest in development journalism led to a SAWM-UNICEF fellowship. Ray is currently pursuing a doctorate in English literature at Bhubaneswar’s Utkal University, with an emphasis on the role of journalists as life narrators.
Ray is also a visiting faculty member at Birla Global University in Bhubaneswar. Throughout her career, she has garnered various accolades and recognitions, including the Laadli Media accolades for Gender Sensitivity (East) 2013-14 and the Aryaa Awards for Excellence in Journalism 2016-17.
