Coal Sector to Complete 67 First Mile Connectivity Projects by 2027
Sh. M. Nagaraju, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Coal, chaired a review meeting to evaluate the progress of the First Mile Connectivity (FMC) projects of Coal Companies. The Ministry of Coal is managing 67 FMC projects (59 from CIL, 5 from SCCL, and 3 from NLCIL) with a total capacity to transport 885 MT coal annually, and these projects are scheduled to be completed by 2027.
The Ministry has devised a plan to improve the mechanized coal transportation and loading system under the FMC project to reduce the transportation of coal on roads. Coal Handling Plants (CHPs) and SILOs with Rapid Loading Systems provide several benefits, such as crushing, coal size control, and fast computer-assisted loading.
FMC projects provide several advantages, such as reduced manual intervention, accurate pre-weighed quantity, quicker loading, and improved coal quality. By reducing loading times, rakes and wagons will be more readily available. Reduced traffic on roads will result in lower pollution and diesel consumption.
The Ministry of Coal has set an ambitious target of producing 1.3 billion tonnes of coal in FY25 and 1.5 billion tonnes of coal in FY30 to improve India’s energy security and promote self-reliance through the substitution of domestically mined coal for imported coal. The development of environmentally friendly, rapid, and cost-effective coal transportation is a key objective.
