Karthik Balagopalan has been named the new Managing Director of the sportswear retailer PUMA India. He previously worked for the same organisation as the Global Director of Retail and E-commerce. Balagopalan will take over for Abhishek Ganguly, who has worked for PUMA’s Indian company for 17 years and has served as Managing Director of PUMA India since 2014.
Ganguly is departing to launch his own business as an entrepreneur. Balagopalan will be based in Bengaluru and will report to Arne Freundt, CEO of Puma. He has been with the brand since 2006, and before to taking on the post of global DTC business leader, he worked in retail operations and business development at Puma India. India has seen remarkable expansion, making it one of the brand’s fastest-growing markets.
About Puma
Puma began with two brothers, Rudolf and Adolf Dassler, who established Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory in 1924. Rudolf Dassler created Puma in 1948, and the same year, Puma released its first football footwear, The Atom. The Super Atom, the first football boot with screw-on studs, was the company’s first big contribution to the football world in 1952.
Puma became recognized in the 1960s for their superior vulcanization production technology, which resulted in improved performance. Puma’s jumping cat emblem first appeared in 1967, then it was changed to a puma jumping across the corner of the word PUMA in 1979.

Karthik Balagopalan has been chosen as the new Managing Director of PUMA India, succeeding Abhishek Ganguly, who had been the Managing Director of PUMA India since 2014. Abhishek is leaving PUMA to launch his own business and will stay until the end of August to guarantee a smooth transition. Karthik has been with PUMA since 2006 and is now the Global Director of Retail and e-Commerce. He will be headquartered in Bangalore, India, and will report to PUMA CEO Arne Freundt. Arne Freundt praised Karthik’s leadership and praised Abhishek’s contributions to the firm.
