Vicente Clavel, the head of the Cervantes publishing house, first suggested the idea of honouring Miguel de Cervantes with a day in 1922, which is when World Book and Copyright Day got its start. On October 7, 1926—the anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes’ birth—World Book Day was first honoured in Barcelona.
The day of Cervantes’ death, April 23, was instead chosen as the new date in 1930. The choice of this date was made because it falls on the same day as the birthdays and passings of numerous notable writers, including Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and William Shakespeare.
World Book and Copyright Day was established by UNESCO in 1995 and are now a recognised international occasion.
