The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, along with Union Minister of State for Communications, Devusinh Chauhan, launched the ‘Antyodaya Shramik Suraksha Yojna’ on July 8 in the Nadia district of Gujarat. This scheme is designed to provide accident insurance coverage to laborers and their families, making Gujarat the first state in India to implement such a program.
Antyodaya Shramik Suraksha Scheme:
The ‘Antyodaya Shramik Suraksha Yojna’ is an accident insurance scheme introduced by the Gujarat government to extend financial support to laborers in the event of workplace accidents.
The scheme is implemented through the Indian Postal Department, Indian Post Payment Banks, and the Ministry of Labor and Employment.
The primary objective of the ‘Antyodaya Shramik Suraksha Yojna’ is to prioritize the welfare and safety of laborers, ensuring they receive financial security in case of accidents at work. It acknowledges the significant contribution of laborers to India’s development and aims to provide them with essential social security measures.
Data of approximately 28 crore workers in India will be compiled to include them in the coverage of the ‘Antyodaya Shramik Suraksha Yojna’. The Union Minister of State for Communications has assured the Chief Minister that within 60 days, one lakh underprivileged families in the Kheda district will benefit from this scheme.
Under this scheme, laborers can avail of accident insurance coverage with an annual premium of either Rs. 289 or Rs. 499. In the unfortunate event of accidental death or permanent disability, the family will receive financial assistance of Rs. 10 lahks. Additionally, in the case of the laborer’s demise, their children will be eligible for educational support amounting to Rs. 1 lakh.
The introduction of the ‘Antyodaya Shramik Suraksha Yojna’ in Gujarat demonstrates the state government’s commitment to the welfare of laborers. By providing accident insurance coverage, the scheme aims to offer financial support and security to laborers and their families in case of workplace accidents. Gujarat sets an example for other states by prioritizing the well-being and safety of laborers through this initiative.
