The Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government has taken a significant step towards bridging the digital divide with the official launch of the Kerala Fibre Optical Network (KFON) on June 5. Known for being the first state to declare the right to the internet as a basic right, the Kerala government aims to ensure high-speed broadband internet access for all households and government offices through the implementation of KFON.

How KFON aims to bridge the Digital Divide in Kerala

KFON is an extensive optical fibre cable network spanning 30,000 km, with 375 Points-of-Presence strategically placed across the state. The infrastructure of KFON will be shared with all service providers, including cable operators. However, individual beneficiaries will need to rely on private, local internet service providers for their connectivity, while the cable work for government offices will be managed by others. The government has emphasized that KFON will be made available through local ISP/TSP/cable TV providers.

Current Connectivity Status

As of June 5, KFON has successfully provided connectivity to 17,412 government offices and 2,105 households. Additionally, a cable network has been laid down to connect 9,000 more houses. In the first stage of KFON, the government is planning to extend connectivity to 30,000 government offices and 14,000 families categorized as Below Poverty Line (BPL).

Unleashing High-Speed Internet: The Potential of KFON

KFON promises internet speeds ranging from 10 Mbps to 10 Gbps, offering a significant boost to internet connectivity across Kerala. Furthermore, once KFON is connected to mobile towers, the network aims to expedite the transition to 4G and 5G technology, ensuring even faster and more reliable internet access.

In conclusion, the launch of the Kerala Fibre Optical Network (KFON) marks a significant milestone in the Kerala government’s efforts to bridge the digital divide. By leveraging an extensive optical fibre cable network, KFON aims to provide high-speed broadband internet access to all households and government offices. With plans to extend connectivity to a substantial number of government offices and BPL families in the first phase, KFON is poised to transform the digital landscape of Kerala. The network’s impressive internet speeds and potential for future advancements demonstrate the government’s commitment to making affordable and reliable internet connectivity accessible to all citizens of the state.
